Summary
They arrive when the fire is mostly quenched. Back at home, from the television set, that mall had been consumed already. And they had sat, phone clutched between their joined hands, waited and waited for the dial tone to switch to their little boy’s voice. There was nothing.

Behind a wilting strip of ash-dusted caution tape, they see him.
Beatrice clutches to her husband’s, Daniel Harrington’s, arm tight. “Steven!” she chokes out around a sharp, too short intake of breath. Without thinking, without question, she moves one foot in front of the other. Lets her fingernails drag along Daniel’s robed arm, harsh and quick. It's October 1986, the Byers have been living with the Wheelers for 3 months now, and Mike can't sleep through the night, waking to nightmares and struggling to reconcile his growing awareness of his feelings for Will with the expectations of everyone around him. It all comes crashing down around him very quickly and suddenly (though it was a long time coming).
