Kohaku had known it was a trap the second they walked into the room.
The air was too still, the silence too loud. It was clearly an ambush, one that Madara didn’t seem to recognize, instead barging forward like usual, pistol at the ready.
Kohaku should’ve stopped him.
He should’ve done something, instead of watched as Madara leaned back against the darkened plaster wall, his gaze meeting Kohaku’s in a single, electrified moment that made dread pool in the boy’s stomach.
He should’ve gone first.
But now, it was too late.
The BANG! still echoed in his ears, the blood speckling his face and soaking into his black clothes warm against his skin. Madara’s silence as he collapsed to the ground, not even uttering a cry of pain as he crashed into the linoleum floor, blood already leaking out around the bullet hole in his gut. Kohaku’s own scream had replaced Madara’s, a scream that he should have trained himself to suppress. But no, in a moment of panic, the cry had slipped out, leaving him scrambling to close the short distance between them, grabbing onto Madara’s coat and shaking him roughly.
“MADARA-HAN!”
Tl;DR: Mama gets shot and Kohaku finally breaks.

It’s not a matter of whether Tsukasa would be okay with it, no — he’s seen Rui at his worst, sat beside him when it’s too much and all he can do is curl his knees to his chest and rock back and forth and tug at his hair and try hard not to cry, when the only word he can get out is ‘sorry’ and he’s scared to let Tsukasa hold him because he doesn’t know if it’ll make it better or worse. He’s held Rui on bad days, mornings where nothing is right and he can’t fix it and the words won’t come out at all.
It’s not Tsukasa, it’s him. He needs to know that he can get through this, that he can manage one date without breaking down. He needs to know that he can pretend to be okay.
