A little panicked, she added as sincere as she could. “I love you, Percy. You do know that, right?”
His gaze softened again. He kissed her. He didn’t answer.
She should have put it together. That should have been it. She had all the puzzle pieces.

Percy let out a puff of air. “Almost. I just need you to know… I had someone I looked up to, too, you know? He went on a quest, which was unheard of back then. He was an unreal fighter and made me feel welcome and safe more than anyone else had. He was my friend and he made camp feel like home. And at the end of the summer he tried to kill me and spent the next few years trying to do it again, over and over. Not to mention the whole raising Kronos thing.”
Luke. Nico had heard whisperings about who the traitor demigod had been before he’d left camp, but the stories tended to focus on Annabeth’s relationship with him, Percy caught in the middle of some fucked up triangle. Nico hadn’t really thought about Percy’s relationship to Luke independent of Annabeth. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because a lot of times the people we look up to are fucked up,” Percy said, hands up. “They let us down.”

The only person who had succeeded in making her laugh—hell, the only person who hadn’t shied away from trying. Emily knew she wasn’t so fragile she couldn’t be trusted not to break. There was a level of trust there that, simply put, nobody else had in JJ, and vice-versa. Emily had an inability to say no to her, and JJ, despite knowing better, was incapable of not using that to her advantage.
