“Rest assured, the story has already ended,” the princess says, eyes twinkling. “This is what comes after the afterword, Shichika. We are the disappointing sequel best left unwritten.”

The princess snorts; a curiously unladylike sound.

“Oh please, don't flatter yourself. Your dear sister was a monster. That unpleasant woman was a monster in her own right, too. The two of us? We're merely objects forged by monsters, for monstrous purposes. There is a difference.”

“I wanted her—” Sokka coughs out a laugh, weak and reedy. Shakes his head again. “It’s so stupid.”

Bato squeezes Sokka’s shoulders, hopes his furs are thick enough to keep the tremor of his heartbeat from reaching the boy’s ears. The silence stretches along with Bato’s nerves

    Blue Azalea, chapter 2:

“You can’t honestly expect me to just release her to you.” Zuko grumbles. His face is wan, stray hairs escaping an already messy topknot.

“I’m not denying her crimes, but she’s tribe, Zuko. She deserves to be tried by her own people.”

Zuko’s face heats up, predictably. “Her crimes were against Fire Nation citizens!” He snaps.

Katara rises from the table and practically snarls at him, the tea in her cup seems to shiver. “And you think you have the right to judge her, after what your people did to us, did to her?”

There’s a long, tense silence before Zuko’s shoulders sag, his expression defensive yet laced with unmistakable guilt. “You’re right,” he sighs. “I’ll talk to the council and make arrangements for her transfer.”

“You shouldn’t be alone with your choices. That’s what tribe is for.”

Katara doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She leans over the railing and pretends to watch the sea, her thoughts too heavy to be dispersed by the waves.

"Well then," he said, holding out his arm to her with a gallant air. "It seems we must test your leech's reason after all. Shall we, my dear?"
