Summary
Following the announcement of snow leopard hybrid Shane’s retirement from the NHL, fans speculate as to what could cause one of the greatest hockey players of their generation to retire while still in his prime. Especially with his husband still captaining the team.
Eurasian wolf hybrid Ilya struggles to focus on hockey when he knows his pregnant mate is left at home without him, making his possessive instincts rear their ugly head. When their first batch of away games hit, he makes sure that his mate will never be left alone…OR
Fans speculate. Shane deals with the struggles of pregnancy. Ilya deals with the struggles of being away from his pregnant mate. Both of them deal with the possessiveness that comes from the pregnancy. Rose is a great friend.

Summary
“We can't be something, Hollander.” The look on Ilya's face is heartbreaking. If Shane had to guess, he feels the exact same way as him. They both know there's more and they want it, but there are too many barriers in place preventing them from this.
Well, maybe that will change once Shane takes the test that's been burning a hole in his pocket since he bought it at the convenience store a block away. He was going to take it after the game and talking with Ilya regardless, but Ilya being there depended on how this conversation continued.
“What if we had to be?” Ilya turns his head and perks an eyebrow at that, and Shane takes a deep breath. “Have you ever heard of the MC-15 gene?”
“Shane…” Ilya's eyes have grown wide, and Shane lets out a nervous chuckle.
“It runs in my family, so I got tested when I turned thirteen and I have it. It was one of those things where I knew about it in the back of my mind, but I never thought about it because I had no reason to.”

Summary
When he releases his grip on Shane’s chin, drags his knuckles along Shane’s jaw, Shane follows the touch, chasing Ilya’s fingers with his mouth.
Fuck. He is so fucking transparent. So clearly fucking vulnerable. A careless move could break him, and Ilya is not the sort of person who can be trusted with fragile things. People don’t trust him with much at all.
[Or: five times Shane doesn't use a safeword, and one time Ilya does.]

Summary
There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.
He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.
Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.
