His promise is laced with bitter honey and fake comfort, as if Till wants a figment of his last memory of Ivan to follow him around like a manifestation of all the emotions he associates him with. Guilt. Fear. Sorrow.
He wants Ivan here with him. He wants Ivan to leave him alone.

“Slow down,” Ivan interrupts quickly, and then he falls silent. For a few agonisingly long seconds, he wonders if Ivan hung up on him. He lets out a muffled sob at the thought.

They didn't talk much, nor did they know what to talk about, because what they really knew was that there were only a few hours left until they had to go on stage and, consequently, one of them would die there.
Ivan and Till were the only ones in the break room after one of the training sessions that fixed "flawed" aspects of themselves, and it would be the last time they would have the opportunity to be so close to each other.
