But it had been irreversibly branded in his mind. There was something steely and uncompromising under the gentle exterior of the boy that had kissed her so carefully in London.
Sometimes she wonders if Beck brought this out of him. Peter harbors a silent anger at the man that launched him into infamy. He is supposed to be better than anger. Or at least she knows that is what he feels. She sees the way he carries the burden of these feelings with some kind of misguided righteousness.
It is okay to be mad, she tells him. It is okay to feel whatever you feel.
He always reaches for her in those moments.

She does not like to think about that; he feels as much a brother as the man who stood in for him today. Not like her family, not someone she knows truly, so well she could sketch them from memory and sees them fully in dreams.
He seems an abstract concept, one who exists far enough away that she’s never needed to dwell on it before. More a ghost story than a sibling. A monster hidden away is still a monster.
