Erik was four years old when he was sold by his mother to Babet, the travelling dentist and showman with empty eyes and a false smile, who began calling the boy "Claquesous" and exhibiting him for paying crowds, until an incident occurred in 1828 which caused the two to start over in Paris. There, they formed the Patron-Minette, which soon ruled the criminal underbelly of the city. All the while, Babet never once seemed to suspect Erik of the thorough, unalloyed hatred the young man held for him, overripe and hidden, biding its time...
When circumstances draw the two closer, Erik and Éponine begin to hope in the possibility of a new life together—of leaving Paris and starting fresh. But the clutches of the past are not escaped so easily. Their young love will be tested to the limit, and their new life will come only at a heavy cost.
