    Summary

They hug every day. They swear it’s “just friendly.” Their friends swear it’s definitely not.

When a week-long no-hug challenge turns into a full-blown emotional crisis, Gunwook and Matthew must prove (to everyone and themselves) that they’re totally fine without each other’s arms.

    Spoiler: they’re not.

Hao rubbed the back of his neck. “Sometimes I feel like I’m interrupting… something.”
Gunwook tilted his head, smirking. “Interrupting what, exactly?”
Your… hugging… business?” Hao muttered helplessly.

    “It’s not like that.”
“Then what is it like?” Hanbin asked, eyes glinting with mischief.
Without missing a beat, Gunwook threw out, “Health benefits.”

Before practice, the team gathered at Jiwoong’s, where he had already taped a makeshift scoreboard to the fridge. In bold red marker, it read: The Great No-Hug Experiment: Witness Two Fools Battle Their Instincts.

“Hyung, move over,” Gunwook said, reaching for the same lunchbox. Their hands brushed. Both froze.
Jiwoong, across the room, gasped dramatically. “Violation!”
“Not a violation!” Gunwook barked. “Accidental lunchbox collision!”
Gyuvin, leaning against a chair nearby, scribbled something on a notepad anyway. “Emotional infraction marked.”

“If you’re that jealous, you can join us. Be a duck or something.”
Taerae frowned. “Why am I a duck?”
    “You look like one!”

“Yeah! He left us aloooone! Where is he?” Matthew’s voice climbed about two unnecessary octaves.
Gunwook debated whether telling him the truth that Taerae and Gyuvin were on their way to have a beautiful baby in 9 months would help or destroy him.

    Summary

    There were rules.

Unspoken ones. Gentle, stupid, unbreakable little things that no one ever said out loud but everyone followed anyway. Things like:

Absolutely never flirt with, kiss, date, hook up with, or otherwise engage romantically with any of your best friends’ siblings.

And Matthew had never even considered breaking it.

Matthew crashing out as to why his best friend’s brother, Gunwook, is suddenly hot in his eyes.

    “I practically changed his diapers!”
“You really didn’t,” Jiwoong said as he slid into the booth beside Matthew, smirking. “He told me you once made him eat wasabi-flavored chips when he was eleven and cried for half an hour.”
Matthew groaned. “Exactly! That’s the kind of relationship we have.”
“Didn’t he almost beat your pull-up record in the gym last semester?” Jiwoong asked casually.
Matthew gave him a look. “Why are you on his side?”
“I’m on the side of truth,” Jiwoong said, grinning. “And the truth is, Gunwook’s hot now, and you’re spiraling.”

“Okay,” he said carefully, “First of all, I’m jet-lagged. Second, your brother is… different now!”
“He has shoulders,” Hanbin said flatly. “So what?”
“So he knows he has shoulders! And he keeps sitting next to me like he’s trying to make it a thing.”
Hanbin raised a brow. “What thing? Is it working?”

“I’m not acting weird,” Matthew said, for the third time that morning.
“You’re fidgeting,” Jiwoong said. “You never fidget. You’re like a golden retriever on xanax. Now you’re all—” He made a vague motion with his hands. “Twitchy.”
    “I’m just tired, hyung.”
“You say that every time someone catches you thinking about Gunwook.”

“Gunwook’s not a kid anymore. And I’d rather he be with someone who cares than with some random sophomore who just likes his jawline.”
    “…Have you seen his jawline?”

“Just date already,” he mumbled, staring at his phone on the floor like he was exhausted. “You guys are unbearable.”
    Hanbin blinked. “What?”
“You keep offering him your seat like it’s 1850 and he’s a duchess,” Yujin said flatly. “And Hao-hyung keeps bringing you two drinks like you’re married and he knows your usual.”
Zhang Hao flushed bright pink, immediately looking for a surface to sink into.
Hanbin stared at the floor. Then at his lap. Then at Hao. “Wait. Is this a thing?”
Hao looked like someone had unplugged him.

“I thought I was making it obvious.”
“You made me a tea once and then avoided me for a month…”
    “I panicked!”
Matthew leaned over to Gunwook. “Oh my god. They’re worse than us.”
Gunwook whispered back, “No one’s worse than us.”

This is your chance. Cry out for help. Maybe he understands you better than your mother does. It seems like he's actually interested. Do yourself a favor and let other people into your life. Maybe he can help you laugh again. To show your smile. To love yourself. Be honest and say you're not okay.
    Gunwook avoided further eye contact.
    "Yes. I'm okay."

"It turned out that my grandma left the house on Jeju for me. She wrote a letter before her death. Do you know what it said?" Gunwook shook his head. He obviously wasn't able to know.
"She was hoping I would stay in Jeju, with my friends and with the sweet, tall guy who always bowed a whole 90 degrees whenever he met her."

He doesn't shoot his thigh full of testosterone every week just to be told he doesn't have any.
Matthew clicks his tongue as he taps the side of the syringe. “You don’t even shoot it yourself.”

“Back to the question though. Would you rather people see you as a feminine guy or a masc girl? If those were the only two options.”
    Gunwook frowns.
“You cannot kill yourself,” Matthew adds.

"I feel like nowadays if someone says I look like a girl, it’s less that they think of me as a girl and more that they’d fuck me if I was one.”

“A blue band-aid with basketballs on it for a brave boy.”
“I feel so affirmed,” Gunwook drawls, voice completely flat and dead.

“You wouldn’t want to be my butch boyfriend?”
“You’re going to make a dramatic TikTok calling me a bad boyfriend no matter what I say.”
    “Nah, I’d just brag about speedrunning the L, G, B and T.”
