Summary
Once upon a time, they were lined up side by side for every family portrait, two lovely, rosy-cheeked siblings. Later, there are grinning selfies from when they were still siblings but also something else, something sweet-but-wrong-but-perfect-but-awful. Later again, there are no more snaps together, empty space forced by the crippling weight of secrecy and guilt.
Now, Aleksander prepares to pose for wedding photos with somebody else. Alina doesn't know if she can stand it.

After the first time, it was easy to keep looking in on Alina. Keep her socials pulled up on his phone, tapped into her webcam in a window on his laptop. She wasn’t always there of course, working at her school’s library and an off-campus coffee shop, but he liked to see her in her space, where she is free to be her true self, unfiltered, unobserved. By all but him.
He adored the way she stretched and contorted herself when she sat on her bed too long, the way she worked so hard to have perfect posture at her desk even though he could see her leaning forward as she played her videogames. He became enraptured by the sight of her in her little sleep shorts, watering her vast collection of plants, studying, even sleeping.
But most of all, he delighted in how voracious she was.
Or, Aleksander watches people for a living, but his new account is different.

There are few things that put Grisha women in the moods like the one Alina is in: monthly cycles (unlikely, he thinks, given that according to the healer’s, the tonics that the women drink stop them completely, and he watches Alina drink one every morning with her breakfast), gossip and in-fighting (also unlikely, given that Aleksander knows everything that goes on in the Little Palace, and Zoya has been gone for months), which leaves only one option.
It has something to do with sex.

With her, he is soft, and beneath the heavy, dark exterior she sees him — he is lonely, perhaps just as lonely as she is. In each other, they have found answers to questions Alina did not realize she was asking, questions that he has been ruminating on all along.
Her hands slide into his hair, feeling the soft strands beneath her fingers as he tugs her closer, cups her jaw and kisses her as though he’ll never get the chance again. Nothing about this kiss is safe, Alina knows — not just because it’s him, but because of the way he does it, the way he tugs her into his body until she is pressed along the length of him, the way she knows that he intends never to let her go.
