There's something to be said for those moments in-between missions, the ones where you manage to hold off on worrying about the tadpoles in your brain. The brief instances of levity in which you can afford to appreciate the beauty hidden in this strange, precarious new world you find yourself navigating.
The moments where rubies sparkle in a new light behind a curtain of long lashes, the mischievous, twinkling stars casting a blue glow glossing off silvery hair. Pretty things seem suddenly far too intent to watch your mouth run away from you, especially where a particular traveling companion who you just can't seem to stay away from is concerned.
Can you merely be Astarion's mirror in all this? Can your honeyed words break through his bitter smiles? Or have your compliments doomed you both from the moment they left your lips?

The vampire nods slowly, letting his body sink back onto the floor once more as he tries to release the tension building up inside of him. He reaches for the vial, but Nir gently pushes his hand away.
“Don’t,” he insists, pressing the rim of the glass to Astarion’s lips. “I’ll take care of you.”
Astarion scrunches his nose, pulling away from the other’s touch despite the feelings at the base of his mind screaming at him to give in for once. “Ugh, I’m not helpless, you know. I don’t need you to dote on me.”
Niraeniel shakes his head. “Maybe so, but you don’t need to carry everything on your own, you know. Just let me help.”

This is about a headcanon I wanted to explore through narrative fiction. About how it would feel for Astarion to be properly fed after 200 years of starvation - because I cannot even imagine that it would feel “normal” for him to be satiated, despite his vampiric inclinations and instincts to drink whenever blood is available, and despite the painful hunger. I don’t know if it makes sense in the end but oh well.

"Come with me to Avernus," Wyll says, easy, like he’s asking Astarion around for tea. Right. The Blade of Frontiers is the Blade of Avernus now. Sworn to cleanse the Hells of the devils that threaten the Sword Coast or some such rot. What an absurd idea. For a moment, Astarion imagines several ways to kill him painfully. Go there. To the place of her worst nightmares. The place she refused to return to despite his pleading. After everything that's happened, to step foot in that place, without her. It felt like a mockery of his pain to even suggest it.
The sun rises after the fall of the Absolute and Astarion burns first. Overcome with grief from the death of the first person he truly cared for, and haunted by her memory, Astarion accompanies the Blade of Avernus to Hell.

Any hope that they'd rescue him dwindled after the first twenty-four hours, leaving him to wonder how he’d developed so much hope in the first place.
