Lately, every time Mu Qing laughs, even when it’s at his expense, something in Feng Xin cracks open, like his heart needs to take up more space in his chest, shoving his ribs and other organs out of the way. Like this, with Mu Qing staring at him, open-mouthed and confused, surprised, Feng Xin thinks maybe they were never meant to be something as simple as “friends.”

“Um?” Feng Xin’s mind is blank. Mu Qing can’t be saying what Feng Xin thinks he’s saying. He can’t be implying that he’s willing to — to do anything about the curse. He can’t be. Mu Qing looks away, and the long line of his neck catches Feng Xin’s eye. Maybe his brain isn’t blank after all, because now it’s filled with thoughts of marking Mu Qing’s skin where it will show above his collar.
Feng Xin and Mu Qing are sent to retrieve a cursed scroll that contains a dangerous aphrodisiac. Somehow, they both end up touching it.

He wretched again. Nothing. He fell back against the wall, no warm arms to wrap themselves around him this time. No smell of cheap cigarettes and summer time sweat, no sun on his neck... Hyperventilating, he curled in on himself. No Gueira.
