Summary
Mac was outnumbered by two of the most stubborn people he knew, and Matty was an immovable object once she put her foot down. Arguing would do nothing but wear out his throat, worsen his headache, and tear at his remaining shreds of dignity.
“Understood.” Mac finally replied, voice frigid and empty. He loosened his grip on the handle to the door and straightened up. It felt like all of his emotions iced over: anger crystallized into resentment, and his fierce desire to be heard recoiling back into a blank expression.
Jack’s eyes danced searchingly across his face. “C’mon, Mac…”
“I’m benched, you got what you wanted.” Mac met Jack’s gaze with a cool glare. He spoke with a carefully controlled, matter-of-fact, coldness. “I don’t know what else you want from me, Dalton.”
Jack’s face fell. Mac closed the door with a quiet click.***
A Sequel to "The Art of Showing Up (And Staying)", would strongly recommend reading that first!
