The words tumble out faster than El can think, it's an embarrassing admission to her as she's resurfacing the events of her failure to procure a Christmas present for Mike from the night before as it had managed to break at the last minute. It was a bracelet she had tried to make particularly for him, with carved engravings of each letter of his first name into an individual piece of wood with the souvenirs he had sent her over the time where there was more distance between them than they had ever feared. It had broken apart, entirely snapped beyond what she believed was beyond repair after all her effort to make something she wanted Mike to be happy with, to finally make him happy with a present she made after all he'd done for her."

Summary
Throughout his life and time at school up until the week Eleven had come into his life, Mike's facial features had become something he attempted to detach himself from them due to the bullying and mocking he received. And as much as he played the role of the cool and impenetrable leader, each time 'frog face' was uttered, it left another crack in his facade to cover up before the party caught up with him and decided he was someone to be abandoned and wasn't someone that anyone needed. He never felt particularly proud of his appearance or tried to look particularly good with the exception of when he tried to look good or 'enough', even when he was around her.
But if he'd listen, he'd learn to transform subjection of cruelty into a blanket of softness.
or, a concept i wrote for my mutuals that i thought was funny at one point based off of a stuffed frog el kept for company that reminded her of mike, and his reaction to it.

She’s hurt, and she’s angry, she doesn’t want to watch this stupid game show—the camera cuts back and forth to her eyes, the TV. Rory is on the edge of her seat, wondering what’s going to happen next, even though something about it starts to feel a little familiar. They cut back to the TV one last time, music growing louder—
It explodes. Under Matilda’s stare.
Rory feels an icy, unpleasant sense of déjà vu, and then she starts to figure out exactly why Mama put this on.

El stared intently at the young man in front of her, her husband, before taking his free hand into hers and curling her fingers around his own. ‘You’re home,’ she replied simply.”
