Samira has always liked Cassie’s voice, and how it drips like sticky honey, sugary and homey in the best way. Or how her lips part as she speaks, just barely flashing her teeth before she lets her mouth fall shut again. That’s another thing Samira’s always liked, tried to replicate, taken notice of—Cassie’s patience, how she deliberates and thinks and ponders before all else. How she makes everyone feel seen.

Yolanda was right—she had asked for that. She couldn’t be mad that she was being ignored if it was her own doing.

She had been Icarus—soared too close to the sun, and got shocked when the burn ran viciously down her arm, scolding her all the way to her heart.

Then, as lightly as possible, eager to not awaken the thing that feels closer to a literal bomb in her hands than a living creature, Trinity guides the hospital blanket over the baby’s relaxed body. Keeping her warm and comforted, in the otherwise slightly chilled room.
“Didn’t know you were a baby whisperer, Santos.”
Trinity almost jumps out of her skin, jerking back and immediately glancing down to make sure the sudden movement didn’t jostle the little one.
“Uh, I didn’t—“ Trinity shrugs, staring at Yolanda like a deer in headlights.
