He wanted to bury his face in the juncture between his neck and shoulder, to breathe in the smell of him, to touch his skin and give him everything that he could. He wanted to give to him until there was nothing left, until Shane had disappeared into him forever.
“Look at me,” Ilya’s voice was quiet, but Shane obeyed immediately, his eyes fuzzy at the corners, “How are you feeling?”
Shane intended to lie. There was no reason to complicate things with hard truths that not even he understood. Instead, his lip wobbled, and he found that he couldn’t say anything at all.
“Ah,” Ilya made a noise that sounded nearly as devastated as Shane felt, and put a hand on the back of his neck, pulling him forward. Shane went easily, his forehead pressing into Ilya’s shoulder, and breathing deeply through his nose, trying not to cry.
Or, Shane drops after leaving Ilya's house.

He was alone because Ilya had left because Ilya always had to leave. [...] He felt horrible. Ilya had left. Maybe Shane hadn’t been good enough? No, he would’ve left anyway. He always left.
But maybe he would’ve stayed a little longer if Shane had been better? Maybe if he’d been better, used more of those tricks he’d been trying to learn, he wouldn’t have left so soon. Maybe he would’ve wanted to stay like Shane wanted him to stay. Would’ve wanted to hold him like Shane wanted to ask him to do. Maybe Shane wouldn’t be trapped in this cavernous space between worlds, feeling like he was free-falling, searching for the path out of this emptiness.
OR
Shane experiences sub-drop for the first time. Ilya holds him through it.

Shane's eyes flit back to him, wide and swallowed up by a tangle of emotions.
"I always was," he says, his voice hushed. "You were there."

Nothing feels right or good. Not the weight of his pads or the glide of his skates over fresh ice. Not the crispness of the rink air or the roar of a sold out Montreal crowd. Not his teammates’ triumphant shouts when he sinks a goal or cool water in his throat after a hard workout or well wishing texts from his parents before every game. It’s all just… faded.
Grey.
Empty.
Shane doesn’t know how to bring color back into his life. Not when he leeched it out himself with every step he took away from the only person who has ever truly, honestly seen him.
