Summary
Things aren’t quite the same this time round. The big things don’t seem to change—the Palaces. The bad guys. The reports on TV, another psychotic breakdown, another mental shutdown. But the small stuff varies a lot. Ren can check his old probation diary to compare: he meets different people on different days, he does different stuff, he starts working for Iwai way sooner, he doesn’t eat at Big Bang Burger so much. The biggest difference in this timeline that he’s been able to find is that both Yoshizawa sisters are alive. They’re the honor students, the two of them always together, whispered about by the rest of Shujin Academy. Sumire seems—not happy, exactly, but she does seem like herself. She doesn’t end up as Ren’s friend this time, and she doesn’t call him senpai. He misses her, but he’s glad for her as well.
So that’s different.
Also, Akechi has a dog now.

“I don’t like you that way, Ren,” he says. “We’re never going to be together in the way that you want—romantically, I mean. Please know that this isn’t personal. I understand if you need some space afterwards. And I hope you understand my point of view as well.”
I hope you understand wasn’t in the bullet points, it just slipped out of Akechi’s mouth as he watched the look of confusion spread itself across Ren’s face. Ren’s staring at him. He doesn’t even look dismayed, just astounded. Akechi’s fault. He left matters open to misinterpretation for too long. But there’s nothing to be done.
“But,” says Ren.
Akechi braces himself. Here comes the unpleasant scene.
Ren says, “But I’m straight.”
