Summary
In the grand order of things, light and darkness clash. Space condenses. Time collapses. Life persists. Space, the vast ocean of everything, is doomed to die. It's been doomed for centuries; and nobody is more aware of this than a man whose entire existence depends on such an inevitable fate. Unfortunately, Xigbar's always been awful with taking orders, and waiting around to die has always been boring as hell. With only a few hours to midnight on the Doomsday clock, Xigbar hedges his bets with the most confounding companion he can think of, just to take the edge off. Or, make it substantially worse.

Friends or not, Alex loved everyone too much for his own good. He just had no sense of the different types of love, and how his words and actions might cause problems. He was also painfully honest in a way that made you feel bad for lying to him, which resulted in Ryland harbouring a growing pile of guilt every time Alex got a little too close.

So it doesn’t make sense that she’s seeing her here, now, four years later and over two hundred miles away. Her bangs are shorter and her hair is longer, but her freckles are still the same — dotted across her face and nose like pepper sprinkled across paper.
Familiarly, Robin’s stomach twists.
Or: Robin moves to Chicago, gets the girl, figures out how to be brave, and attempts to help Steve with his disastrous love life.

“Alright,” Nancy says, and then, unthinkingly, she adds, “It’s a date, then.”
The other line goes abruptly silent.
Nancy frowns. “Steve? Are you okay?”
She hears him clear his throat. “Yeah, I’m here. I’m great. I’m — I’ll see you and Jonathan Friday?”
And later, much later, Nancy will look back and realize that this is the moment where she should’ve put it together. But she doesn’t. Instead, she says, “Great. We’ll pick you up at six. Sound good?”
“Yeah,” Steve says, his voice quiet and careful. “That sounds great, actually.”
