Summary
Second floor, back table by the window—Yuma’s usual at the café. His latte had already gone cold. The sun lay its hand across half the table like it wanted to help but had no ideas either. In front of him, a mostly empty notebook sat open beside his closed laptop.
The pen in his fingers was too light. He’d tried others—ballpoint, felt tip, mechanical pencil—each one a false start. He’d opened the laptop earlier, stared at the blinking cursor until it felt like a slow taunt, then shut it again. Neither page nor pixel was speaking today.
Movement caught him—a figure down below. Alone on the concrete court. Long limbs, a white overshirt, a basketball shifting from one hand to the other.
Yuma pressed his pen to the page. Nothing formed. The man on the court looked up—not at him, but skyward. Breath visible. The wind pulled lightly at his overshirt. Then he went back to his rhythm. Dribble, pivot, shoot. Miss. Retrieve. Repeat.
A phrase landed—uninvited but tender:
He moves like someone still asking to be forgiven by his own body.
