“You brought a cake,” Wriothesley says, because there's no point pretending otherwise.
Neuvillette says nothing for a moment. He holds the cake as if it might detonate.
“It’s not large,” he says finally. “But I made it myself.”
Wriothesley blinks. “You… made it?”
“I do know how to follow a recipe.” He sounds marginally insulted. “The batter was slightly overmixed, but the icing—”
Wriothesley had to lean against the doorframe. “You made me a cake.”
“You said you don’t celebrate your birthday. Not that you don’t deserve to.”
The words hit harder than they should.
He stares at the cake. It's misshapen. The frosting is lopsided. It's in a travel-safe tin. He can see the corner of a handwritten card tucked against the edge, as if Neuvillette wasn't sure whether to hand it over or hide it. It looks like something out of a memory Wriothesley never had.
Or, Wriothesley never asked for anything, and Neuvillette baked him a cake anyway.

The chain rattled behind Wriothesley now, the collar still tight around his neck, restricting his already labored breathing as he raced through the woods. The shouts and cries of villagers slowly fell away behind him, the only remaining sound the wind through the trees and the beating of his paws on the ground.
Somewhere safe... he had to get somewhere safe.
