    Summary

Lena threw the watch at the wall. Impassioned, maybe. Frustrated, definitely. But the crack it made when it landed and bounced to the floor stopped everything, the time on its face and in the room.

“I’m not some damsel in a tower.” It had felt like an eternity, it took that long for Kara to drag her eyes away from the broken thing on the ground to Lena’s face as she continued to speak. “You can’t protect everyone.”

“I’ve lost too many people.” The fight in Kara was gone, replaced with overwhelming distress. Some animal instinct to protect, protect, protect flaring angry and neon. “I’m not going to lose you too.”

Kara felt a ghost in her life more often than not. Either angry and alone, grief-struck and lonely, or trying not to show how desperately she wanted to be with Lena. Right now, every part was colliding like a horrific crash, too fascinating to look away from, and Lena was watching her with such naked sincerity that Kara’s stomach plummeted through and out of her.

    "I'm not Alex."

Kara hadn't hidden any of it at all.

She doesn’t know what it is she’s looking for, in these mindscapes. It’s like a splinter, wedged into her skin. Sometimes she slips into it without an expectation or an exact thought. She lets her subconscious take her where it wills. She lets Kara exist as a guidepost, central and strong and unchanging.

    Summary

alicent hightower grew up watching princess rhaenyra targaryen of valyria from a distance; through headlines, scandals, and her head-of-the-global-council father's word-of-mouth. in adulthood, she's assigned to oversee the peaceful transition of power in valyria to find that rhaenyra targaryen is precisely as intractable as the media and her father promised—

and far, far more dangerous to the order alicent has built her entire life around.

    Summary

    “What’s she like?”

Alicent sighs. “I do not know. We were friends many years ago.”

At least, Alicent likes to think they were friends. But the princess was always sporadic with her attentions— quick to grow bored of things, discarding the old in favor of the new. Alicent supposes that’s what happened to her, as well. She had written letters, those first few moons after she returned to Oldtown.

    The princess never responded.

The king is seeking a husband for his omega daughter, so countless lords send their sons to vie for the hand of the future queen.

Alicent is not a son. She is not a knight. Her presentation was surely a mistake, one that’s cost her everything. Now she is her brother’s squire, accompanying him to King’s Landing as he competes for the princess's hand.

    Summary

Agatha couldn’t move. It was her, she was sure of it—the dancer from the club, on the night of the last day of school. A stripper was standing in her classroom, addressing her second-graders. A stripper who, until this very moment, had been filed neatly into the category of things Agatha would never think about again. (Except that one time, when she got too drunk on the Fourth of July. And that other time, when she got too drunk on the Seventh of July, which was just a normal Tuesday.) And yet here she was, in practical jeans and a black tee, looking every inch like a competent professional.
