Summary
Emperor Solus zos Galvus is merely a part that Emet-Selch plays - and while he balances his grief for the past with guilt-ridden hope for a possible future, he needs to put on another performance. One that will result in more pain than he ever realised.

Summary
In the wake of their fight with Maruki, Akira could feel reality shift around them.
So when Akira finally made himself open his eyes, after a few minutes of absolute silence around him, he was stunned to look straight into Akechi's red ones, wide and torn open as they stared back at him.
“Uhm,” said Akira.

Summary
After a few more seconds, Akira peeks up at Goro. He’s in the midst of turning his head, as though he had just been looking at Akira, as though he didn’t want to be caught doing so. Akira tempts that fate. He stares at Goro, at the way the sunlight burnishes his hair, at how his throat moves as he swallows. Goro lifts a hand and rubs it across his face and then, abruptly, he sits.
“Fine,” he says. “Let’s start the shitty day.”
The comment, grousing and grudging as it is, makes Akira smile. “That’s the spirit.”
“If you wanted spirit, you should have moved in with Yoshizawa.”
The past year hasn’t just dulled Akira’s ability to mask how he feels behind an impassive wall. He can see Goro’s comment for the slight that it is, not against Sumire, but against Goro himself.
“And yet here I am.” He reaches out then, slowly, so Goro can move away if he doesn’t want to be touched. Yet Goro doesn’t. He remains still, watching as Akira pokes him once, gently, on the forehead. “What does that tell that big brain of yours?”

Summary
What a strange day, Goro thinks to himself. Have they not been in this position before, only for Goro to die as he was about to take Akira’s metaphorical hand? How strange indeed that Akira is both right and wrong at once: Shido can be defeated; just not by Goro. Because Goro is the problem, not the solution.
Being born has been a waste of time. Akechi Goro is a blip in time, an editing mistake in continuity, a tragedy that started and ended long before Kurusu came along.
“It’s okay, Joker,” he says with a smile, not forced or fake or happy, but the only smile he knows to offer his one friend. “It’ll be okay. You’ve got this.”
Goro falls before Akira can answer.
*****
Akechi is sent back in time. It solves nothing.
