“What are you doing here, Wang Yibo?”
Wang Yibo hitches a thumb over his shoulder, pointing at the mouth of the cave. “Taking care of the yao here that’s been bothering the local folks down the mountain,” he says carelessly. “The aunties at market were telling me about the little tricks that it’s been playing and –”
This time Xiao Zhan can’t help the little noise of irritation he lets loose, the way his mouth twists a bit in frustration.
“Are you even human?” he spits out. “Again?”

Xiao Zhan, a peripheral disciple of the GusuLan sect, runs into rogue cultivator Wang Yibo on a night-hunt.

He’s sure that Fjord is aware of him, but the half-orc’s eyes are distant and unseeing, settled on a point somewhere on the floor.
“Fjord,” he says quietly. “I’m here. Can you tell me if you are injured?”

“Blood does things,” Caduceus says. “I think you know that. And from what Jester told me, that altar ritual was almost done. The energies of that, the repression of that magic, it had to go somewhere.”
“That magic,” asks Caleb. “What do you think it will do?”

Summary
When the 118 find out about Buck’s secret thirst account on Instagram – to raise fire safety awareness, obviously – they make fun of him the appropriate amount and move on. Eddie, who has had some recent and birthmark-shaped revelations about his feelings, finds it a little harder to do the same.
Of course, Eddie would never invade Buck’s privacy by searching for and finding the anonymous account. Or looking at all the uploaded photos late at night. Or even directly messaging Buck’s secret account. That would be weird, because he’s certainly not planning on doing anything about his newfound attraction.
However, anonymous account @elbombero118 has no such limitations.

Summary
Buck’s hair is gray at the temples, buzzed neatly on the sides and a bit longer and curlier on top than Chris remembers him wearing it, and there’s a new scar through one of his eyebrows. He looks good, like he’s living a happy life, and the only possible reason Chris can imagine for Buck to be here at Helena Diaz’s funeral in El Paso is that Chris’s father brought him.
“Why would you come?” Chris snaps at him.
Buck blinks. “Why wouldn’t I come?”
“She didn’t mean anything to you.”
“I’m not here for her,” Buck scoffs. “She is dead. I’m here for him.”
or
Chris is forced to grapple with the choice he made eleven years ago when his father comes back for Helena’s funeral.

Summary
“What are you talking about?” Maddie’s voice asks, slightly tinny.
The door struggles to open behind him and he drops the phone.
“Mads,” he says, panic slinking into every syllable. “I—I think—“
“Buck, come out,” Bobby says. “Please, baby.”
Buck’s stomach turns and he shakes his head. No, absolutely not. That—crime against humanity is what that is. As if lunch hadn’t been traumatizing enough.
“Was that Bobby?” Maddie’s voice is distant but rightfully alarmed.
“Something’s wrong with them,” Buck yells down at the phone. “I—I know I said I can get anyone to fall in love with me but this is not what I meant!”
or, the 118 gets dosed with a love potion.

Summary
“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”
Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

Summary
“I don’t know what you want from me anymore,” Eddie says through the door, his voice worn thin at the edges. There’s a soft thud against the wood, and Buck doesn’t need to see it to know – Eddie’s forehead resting there. “Talk to me.”
“There’s nothing to say,” Buck replies. The words come out flat.
“How about when you said you don’t need me?”
Buck exhales, slow and heavy.
Because that’s it. The lie he wants to believe because believing it would make everything hurt less. The one that keeps failing him – failed him today, almost got him killed, almost pulled him down into the pit because for one terrifying moment he was sure Eddie was gone.
One bad call, one broken dam, and suddenly Buck and Eddie aren't pretending anymore.
