Mikey was finding the answer to that question in places he hated to acknowledge. Maybe if you weren't such a nuisance, he'd have an easier time accepting that he was trapped in your gravitational pull. Maybe it was because you were such a nuisance that it happened in the first place.

Junior year was going to eat you alive.
That was the thought you were consistently running from, anyway. Realistically, you were doing pretty decently in your balancing act; between two demanding extracurriculars and a heap of advanced classes, you found it was possible to not crumble when you turned your mind off and just plowed through.
And then you were pulled back into your body when a sort-of-cute friend of a friend was thrown into your rotation without warning; no chances to determine if it was the blessing of a lifetime or if you were cursed.
(Alternatively; you tutor Mikey for one session to help him get his English grade back up, and when he makes the decision to keep coming around, the carefully constructed fortress in your mind starts to crumble.)

Gerard started to snicker, and Mikey’s face warmed. “Uhh…”
“Do the heart ceremony, Mikes,” Gerard lightly nudged him with his elbow. “It’s tradition. Breathe life into the little guy.”
The employee pointed at Gerard and raised her eyebrows in a silent ‘exactly’. “He gets it. C’mon, dude. This is the fun part.”
Mikey groaned, but pressed his lips into a tight line and conceded. “Fine.”
