you know, I've seen all kinds of "Laurens and Angelica bond at the wedding" fics, and this is the only one I've seen with Lafayette instead--and it works, I love it. "Historical Lafayette was basically a puppy" indeed! what a sweetheart.

this is a particularly heartbreaking version of soulmates, wielded to drastic effect--the marks are as much the cause of it all as the result, or at least, Burr's is? Hmm. He takes the advice of his mark through his lifetime (and whose advice is it originally??? untangle that paradox), and Hamilton ignores his, and they're kinda both fucked for it.
I like particularly the nod to the nonromantic nature of their particular soulmate bond (I'm interpreting independent of authorial intentions, though, because no one ever intends an intense bond to be nonromantic)
this fic kinda puts the finger right on the thing about these two being trans: having this essential thing in common, being so much the same and so different, so much so as to be connected throughout their lives--esp. re: Theodosia Jr and, I guess Laurens Jr--I honestly hadn't considered 'soulmates' as a description of the feeling I'm trying to capture but that's exactly it
oH and I'm back to talking just about the fic and not how the fic interacts with independent ideas in my head--I love the moment Burr shows Hamilton his mark, as though Hamilton doesn't already know he's Burr's soulmate--implying that soulmatehood is not necessarily reciprocal! I love that I love it so much
imagine Eliza drowsing as Ham's leaving that morning, not listening as he says "Best of wives and best of women" as she drifts back off... and then jolting awake all at once a few hours later like "wAIT he saID THE WORDS oH nO" in an utter panic, but by then it's too late

She placed her hand on the side of his jaw and leaned her face into his and it was every political conversation they’d ever had, the way he knew when to press forward and when to let her catch her breath, the way he was cocky and confident and still able to listen to what her lips, her hands, were telling him. “I’ll take Weird Nerd Alexander Hamilton and Student Council Candidate Alexander Hamilton,” she said in a whisper. “If you’ve got any other Alexander Hamiltons hanging around I’ll take them too.”
He brushed back the dark hair that draped over her shoulder, kissed the side of her neck. She could hear the grin in his voice when he spoke. “Just you wait.”
