Carlos had hushed their stammering with a kiss. There was, he said, so much love in Cecil—so much everything, really, but love was the relevant part here. They were overflowing with enthusiasm and affection, he said, and it would be selfish of him to try to keep it all to himself.
And of course it wasn’t accurate—he was far from selfish, and anyway no amount of love and devotion was good enough for their wonderful Carlos. But Cecil said nothing more. Because Carlos did have an important and scientifically accurate point.

There's nothing Cecil can say. They know; they've tried it all. No amount of "This doesn't make you female; plenty of men have heats" or "There's nothing to be ashamed of" will reassure him. They can only hold on, stroking their hand up and down Carlos' back (slick with sweat, and hot under Cecil's hand, and made of skin)—until he shudders and pushes them gently away.

He leans in to kiss Cecil's sharp mouth, and lets the kiss and their hands soothe him, relax him, ease him back into this moment. He breaks the kiss and turns his face into their palm, then curls his head so that their fingers slide into his hair.
