He was still reeling from it. It made him bury his face further into Edwin’s shirt, as if he could burrow all the way into Edwin’s core and curl up there.
“Robin,” Edwin murmured. “Darling?”
Edwin clearly needed something from him. It was not fair to make him guess at Robin’s emotions. But the words, I almost lost you, and I feel as if I’m bracing myself to lose you again and again and it’s killing me, did not flow easily off the tongue.

Yes, he is between the devil and the deep blue sea, but it will not be the devil’s bullet that kills him. He won’t let it be. Instead he will drown, in those dark eyes, that furrowed brow, those parted lips. He’s always loved the ocean, drawn to it in a way he can’t quite put to words. Always watching the waves from afar. Never diving in, never daring. But he can see it now, as time seems to stop and the world falls away. It’s just him and Marshall in a hospital room.
Benedikt Motagov is going to drown.
But somehow that’s okay.
The bullet strikes his side. He goes down without a cry.

Marshall let out a surprised, joyful laugh. It was such a beautiful sound. “My oblivious Benedikt,” he said, ever so softly, almost like a prayer. Almost like he did not believe Benedikt to be his. Then he kissed Benedikt, hard and fast. Benedikt stumbled slightly but quickly found his footing, standing rigid so that Marshall could just kiss him and kiss him and kiss him.
“God, I love you,” said Marshall. His cheeks were flushed and his collar somehow undone.
Benedikt couldn’t help but grin.
“There’s that smile!” Marshall exclaimed. “Benedikt Montagov, you really are the easiest person to manipulate into having a good time.”

“He is dead, Marshall,” said his father, his voice full of false pity. General Shu’s hand came down on Benedikt’s arm.
“I know,” Marshall sobbed. “So am I.” He raised his gun.
Then Marshall awoke with a start.

Months after he and Benedikt have settled down in a new city, Marshall has a nightmare that his father finds them in Moscow. Benedikt is quick to reassure him, with plenty of kisses to let him know he’s ok.

Don’t think about it, Marshall chided himself. He thinks you’re dead.
“Lie beside me for a bit?” Benedikt asked, dragging Marshall away from his thoughts.
“…what?”
“It’s the least you could do,” said Benedikt, his voice tired and bitter. “You never fucking paid rent here. You have no right to haunt this apartment.”
“I can’t stay…” Marshall whispered, feeling now like he was the one clawing his own throat out.
“I know….” Benedikt shut his eyes tight, and a singular tear ran down the side of his face, “I know you can’t. Just- just stay until the morning, then I’ll let you go.”

Canon Divergence from OVE in which Benedikt wakes up after Marshall carries him back to their apartment (chapter 19). Many revelations come to light, the most important being that they love eachother against all odds.
