Will Byers loves Mike Wheeler.
It shouldn’t be a big deal. Of course he loves Mike. He always has. But it’s never felt like this. It’s never hurt to think about it, but it also never felt like a revelation rather than a fact. It hurts, and there’s nothing he can do to ease the pain. He looks across the room at Mike and all he sees is beauty where minutes ago he only saw his best friend. He notices entire constellations in the freckles strewn across his nose, stars glittering in his eyes, and it all seems inevitable. He loves Mike. He loves him and it’s a foregone conclusion, a wish on a shooting star destined to burn out. He loves him and he can’t ever have him, not in that way, and there’s nothing in the world that can ever hurt him again quite like this.
OR: When the party dares Mike to tell someone he loves them for one hundred days, Will doesn't expect to be the unlucky recipient. He definitely doesn't expect it to consume his last three months in Hawkins. But like most things in his life, absolutely nothing goes to plan.

Summary
Mike has finally made it as an author. But writing about your own past can get complicated, especially when fans start to draw conclusions that point Mike in the direction of the person he's been writing about all along.
And living life is hard. Especially when you're doing it all on your own. But grief and love are a lot more similar than you might realise. They both tend to wake us up from the monotony of our lives.
OR: Mike has a horrible time, which somewhere along the way turns into a wonderful time.

“We should drive up to him." Nancy’s head snapped up to stare at Will, who had been standing propped up against the refrigerator.He screwed up his face as he took in the confused expressions of the other three in the kitchen, “What? It’s not even ten yet- we could make it there and probably back before everyone else gets here tomorrow. If he won’t- or can’t make the trip himself, let’s force him. It’d work all the time when we were younger.”

It’s the spring of 1993 and the party is getting together in LA to celebrate graduating. Everyone shows up… except Mike, who is hiding in San Francisco. After years of him isolating himself, Nancy gets fed up with his BS and decides to drive up there herself… Well, Dustin drives. Will splutters. “Say what?”
“Like we’re what, Will? Say it. Why do I make your boyfriend so nervous?”
“You’re being a jerk.” He looks down and picks at a loose thread on his sweater.
Mike is being a jerk, but he’s just tired. And Will is here in Mike’s car in the middle of nowhere, protected by the growing darkness of the evening, and goddamnit, Mike wants to hear him say it. He wants to hear Will say Mike isn’t better.
Or: Mike and Will have been Mike and Will for sixteen years. Mike is not going to Will let someone else ruin that.
