Summary
At first glance, Gurye did not look like a lot, a bundle of houses leading to the river, markets that opened with the scrape of metal shutters, an old train station so small you could mistake it for a house. But at night, the mountain changed its shape, Jirisan breathed in the dark, you could feel it in the shift of wind, in the way the moonlight slid down its spine like a blade. Locals pretended not to notice. Acknowledging old things made them restless.
Visitors never stayed long enough to notice it, they called it superstition. Never heard footsteps where no one walked, never felt being watched by something unseen. Jirisan was patient, and patience is just another form of hunger.
Unaware that destiny had already carved a place for him here, a city boy will arrive. The mountain had been waiting, quiet as sleep, sharp as teeth. And the one born here, the boy woven into Gurye’s soil and song, would feel the shift first.
Gurye had always known: change was coming.
