They’d just been playing on loop ever since the day Hiyori vanished and Shin had thought it was just another one of his poor-taste jokes and he’d show up again the next day with that same smile he always had, laughing at Shin for thinking he’d actually left. He was still kind of hoping that one day he’d wake up and hear a knock on the door and Hiyori would be standing outside, and Shin would punch him and Hiyori would pretend like it hurt before laughing it off, and Shin would yell at him for up and vanishing for so long without any contact and Hiyori would brush it off with the fake-sounding apology he always gave, and then everything would all go back to normal, and things would be fine again, and—

He was staring at a plant on Hiyori’s windowsill, a little thing in a pot that was suspiciously close to the color of Shin’s favorite jacket, that looked like something out of a sci-fi horror flick. He couldn’t imagine seeing something like this in real life, but it seemed perfectly at home on the surface of an alien planet—its leaves were spread out like a succulent’s, but they were long and scoop shaped, and each one was covered in red…tendrils? tentacles? that had some kind of shining dewdrop at the end of each one. He’d never seen anything like it in his life.
“It’s an automatic watering system,” Hiyori supplied cheerfully, but unhelpfully. “It’d be a pain to have to maintain the water myself.”
