He had done enough, Xiao had done enough—it had said—and his duties were discharged now, to let him have a little of the hard-won peace, and some enjoyment of it. And maybe—the contract stated in the kindest possible terms—maybe Xiao could have a new life of his own, just like Rex Lapis, as though he was hatched anew.

Only to snatch his phone back, clutching it to his chest and turning so, so red. Oh god.
“Ah—sorry—” You weren’t meant to see that, he thinks as he furiously closes the picture of Xiao’s pretty thighs, the skirt he was wearing lifted a little to expose them plainly. He can hear them, though, the others—how they murmur about Xiao. Their amusement, their interest.
