For a moment it was like his mask, his façade of a psychotic, homicidal maniac faltered, slipping away. And Batman saw what was underneath. He wasn't prepared for it.

Batman had watched him sleep. He liked to do that, to watch Joker sleep – he didn’t do it just when the two of them fucked. Sometimes, Joker would stir and open one eye to the sight of a silhouette on his floor, a shadow in the corner, or a sudden sound of shifting leather. Sometimes, he woke to no sound or smell alone, but could smell that the Bat had been there, smell his kinky outfit and his sweat and the lingering tang of his explosive gel, and he’d know that the Bat had been there, stared over him while he was unconscious.
