Batman wasn't thinking. He'd only wanted to shut that damned clown up. Their lips collided for a second, warm and rough, before Joker pulled away abruptly. For a moment it was like his mask, his façade of a psychotic, homicidal maniac faltered, slipping away. And Batman saw what was underneath. He wasn't prepared for it.
Because Joker looked so...vulnerable. So lost. His big black eyes were threatening to swallow him up like a black hole as he stared at Batman in shock.

Batman had watched him sleep. He liked to do that, to watch Joker sleep – he didn’t do it just when the two of them fucked. Sometimes, Joker would stir and open one eye to the sight of a silhouette on his floor, a shadow in the corner, or a sudden sound of shifting leather. Sometimes, he woke to no sound or smell alone, but could smell that the Bat had been there, smell his kinky outfit and his sweat and the lingering tang of his explosive gel, and he’d know that the Bat had been there, stared over him while he was unconscious.
The last time at Arkham, he’d been there a few nights a week, even if only for an hour or so. The shrinks used to tell him he was dreaming, but he knew better.

Summary
His first real revelation was when he realized he was in love with Batsy, and none of them can live up to that one; the heart fluttering, gut clenching shock of knowing. Joker doesn’t expect them to, but even if they can’t hold a candle to that epiphany, he still has his moments.
This was one of those, a sensation of falling backwards where he stood as it all settled into place in his head. He’s been going about things all wrong, trying to make Bats understand that his family was holding him back. That’s not enough.
Joker needs to make them realize that they don’t need Batman, either. Not the way Joker needs him.
Not the way they need each other. If only they would fall back on one another, instead of falling back on Batman. It’s hard to have the kind of date nights Joker wants with all the kids around; point a gun at a robin and suddenly everyone is so upset. Killing them isn’t worth it. Joker can’t kill them, can’t even allow them to be killed, because his Batsy would never recover.
They don’t understand that they’re inherently different birds, is the thing. All these little robins should be off nesting together, so his bat can come home to roost.
