Summary
Two months after the death of his previous liege, Sir Erik was called to Duskhold by the young new earl. Given that his last interaction with the boy's uncle was a screaming match that resulted in him being left behind to guard the baggage train - incidentally saving his life in the very ambush that he'd predicted - Erik did not have high hopes for how things would go. Those expectations didn't get any better after finding that Earl Malcolm appeared to be exactly the sort of weedy academic that rumor made him out to be. To his surprise, though, Malcolm was well aware of his reputation and his shaky hold on his throne. He'd called Erik to assist with a simple plan: descend into the Duskwater Deep as a two-man party, sneak to one of the chambers deep within, and earn untold fame (and hopefully untold wealth) by opening up a sealed mystical orb that no one had cracked in two hundred years of trying.
It was plainly ridiculous, but Erik's father hadn't raised him to shirk his duty or say no to a challenge. He'd get the man down and back even if he had to carry him.

“You…” Edward hesitated to ask. “You make a habit of carrying teeth in your pocket?”
John glanced down at the tooth lying there.
“Worth a shilling, that,” he said. “Always got a couple about my person in case of need.”
Edward swallowed. John grinned and kissed him. Edward wondered how he could want a man who carried human teeth in his pocket like loose change.
