“Birds of feather?” Erwin raised his eyebrows, now interested in spite of himself.
“Yeah.” Mike wiped his mustache and leaned back in his chair. “If only you could see the two of you from the side—how you were hunched over that plan like a pair of birds of prey—a pair of hawks over carrion. You’d peck at it and gobble it up if you could. Now I thought you were the only one who gets all fired up by the talk of strategy and formations like a cadet on a first date, but Hange is just like that too. Only she’s more into Titans, which, when you think about it, is even worse. Even your noses are the same,” he suddenly added.
“Oh yeah?” Erwin feigned skepticism while barely holding back laughter. His melancholy began to dissipate.
“Yes, they are. Just like those of two hawks—real beaks, I’m telling you.”
“Leave my nose alone and go look at yours in the mirror.”
“My nose,” Mike raised a finger instructively, “is at least an asset for everyone. And the ones you two have are just a waste of space on your faces.”

But pity did not feel kind or thoughtful. All his life, Akechi had abhorred the thought of being pitied, and now he knew he had good reason. You didn’t pity someone because you cared about them or ached for them or wished things had been different. That was sympathy; that was love. You pitied them because you could see the bars on the cage of their own making, and knew there was no way out, and knew they deserved to be there.
Shido had scorched the earth behind him, and eventually the flames had caught up.

When I am with you, Anders works out, I am safe. He has no response to that, no acerbic condemnation to offer; he himself feels the same way, as if Hawke's presence alone is enough to keep his ghosts at bay, the light of her smile warmer and more welcoming than any hearth could ever be. To have this in common with Fenris of all people—it both surprises and unsettles him, and for the first time this evening he feels as though there is something he might be missing between the two of them.
Hawke kisses him and says, "Another."
"Avara," Fenris grumbles; he pauses, thinking, and then says more haltingly than the first, "Non vivebam priusquam…"
"Hmm?"
"Non vivebam priusquam te sciui," he finishes, and buries his face in her hair. I did not live before I met you. Anders blinks, silenced again.

“You aren’t disturbing anyone,” Lorenz sighs.
I don’t understand, Ferdinand wants to say, but that would upset Lorenz further, so he doesn’t say anything.

“You did.” Words and ideals from an age ago given sepulture under the morass of time, companionship. “You do.” Gerome bracketed Inigo within his reach, enfolded into a space carved for him alone. “I am at your mercy in everything. Now to your wanderlust. You have ruined me.”
“I never want to bring you pain.” Caught between a hiccup and sigh, his gaze tunneled into the middle distance. “Mother asked me to join her caravan. If I could have some small part in easing the troubles of this world in what way I can… We could return to Ylisstol often, she would understand.” He faltered, burying his face in the curve of his shoulder. “I’m sorry, I would not mean to hinder you.”
