A philosophical zombie is, by all rights, outwardly indistinguishable from a person. What they don’t tell you about constantly lying from your teeth is that there are actually no social consequences. Be consistent enough and they really can’t tell if you’ve invented your character. In fact, all it takes to build a “cult of personality” is an awareness of what people want to be true about themselves, what will become their own shame if it’s false.
What they don’t tell you is that there will come a time in your life when perfection will not be enough—in fact, it will be the opposite of enough. You will always be monitored. Any chink in that armor will be scrutinized. When they express affection for you, they will express affection for the pelt that you’ve stitched around the jagged edges of your own self, not the thing that lurks inside.
Eventually, you may come to think that good people are those for whom goodness is its own reward, as opposed to simply those who do good.
Eventually, you may grow bored of existing.
