After the crash, Josie has to go through recovery along with the rest of the team. Cruz has silently promised to not have a repeat of her last mission and leave someone else to deal with the aftermath alone. Although they grow closer, they don't want people to know what's going on between them so they become more covert. They can keep secrets from almost everyone. Until Joe puts them in a position where they have to fake date each other.

Cruz Manuelos’ life is divided into two parts: before she knew someone wanted to kill her wife, and after.
The day of the division was a Tuesday in March.
Aaliyah was singing. Cruz wonders, after it all falls to pieces, if it was really a siren song, an ominous sign of what was to come. But in the before, her voice was only harmony.
She saw her through the fogged-up glass of the shower. Rays of sunshine came through the skylight, and her back was lit up and golden. Aaliyah opened the shower door. Her smile was serene, beckoning.
“Join me, my love.”
She got in behind her and rested her hands on her hips. Aaliyah turned in the sunshine and sang into her neck.
“My wife,” Aaliyah hummed against her skin.
This is it, she thought. Bliss.
It ended an hour later, when the world turned, spun, folded in on itself.
