Admittedly, part of the plan didn't include new monsters to appear, a new disease to appear, multiple cults, portals to other dimensions, nor not one, but two military expeditions to deal with some of the other problems.
But now it has, and as the balance of power shifts, so too does the nature of the conflict for all.
Afterall, the war never ends; it only evolves.

Sebastian said nothing. His expression faltered for the first time—something in it caught between regret and defensiveness, like he hadn’t meant to show his hand quite so much.
Then, quietly, he said, “Maybe if you stopped pretending to be someone you’re not, people would actually stick around.”
The words hit like a punch to the gut. They both knew exactly what he meant. And Alex—no matter how hard he tried, no matter how deep he buried it—couldn’t pretend otherwise.
A shaky breath escaped him. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles went white.

Pelican Town was in trouble without the mines. That much was clear to the whole community, the way the uncertain future constantly moaned under their floorboards and flaked down from their rafters. Some residents were resigned to let the void spirits claim the caves for themselves, encouraged by a short-sighted mayor and an avalanche of bad publicity. Others would not let go of their home so easily, grabbing for whatever their hands could carry. From that determination, a team came together: the aimless community builder, the former miner with a family to feed, the florist with deep-rooted morals, the farmer who became one with the soil, the archeologist who kept everything buried, and the drifter who fell desperately in love with him.
