Her mother holds her face, a hand on each cheek. Her grasp is too firm. “Maddie. You do not want to marry a woman. You do not think women are pretty. You do not love women.” Madeline opens her mouth to protest but is silenced by the look in her mother’s eyes. “This is not a discussion, dear. This is something you are going to learn here and now. We will not have this conversation again. Do you understand?” Madeline nods, shakily. She doesn’t understand why, but she certainly knows what her mother means. And she knows to follow the rules.
Character study of Madeline throughout her life. She and her mom are both painfully aware that she's a lesbian but they're trying to pretend that's not real--lots of stuff with her mother, lots of low self-esteem depressing sex with men. MadHel, but it's gonna take a sec and most of it will be repression and yearning.

The trancelike state brings her back to intense journaling sessions she had when she was juggling her writing, acting gigs, the catering service, the never-ending disappointment brought by the two former, and the frustration born out of sharing a room with Madeline Ashton. Writing was her only lifeline.
