The waiting room is relatively empty. There’s two women sitting with their hands clasped in their lap, a teen girl with a bloody nose, every so often wiping away tears. A father with an asleep toddler in his lap. So many hopeless faces.
Regulus has been here for an hour, watching people come and go. Watching them get called and taken away, or seeing people breathe sighs of relief at good news.

Summary
James' arms wrap around Regulus in the glow of the porch, and he basks in the heat it offers in the chilly week night. A soft hum escapes his lips, and he feels more than hears James chuckling.
Hands slip up from his waist to his shoulders, to the back of his neck, diving in the grown curls at his nape before sliding to cup his cheeks. James does it so reverently. Not like he's holding something fragile, or fickle. Regulus always hated being perceived like that— like something that needs protection, needs to be saved, that needs care and to be coddled. He's never even said out loud, but, somehow, James knows.
James doesn't do any of that. No. James holds him like he's precious.

The moment James hears that Regulus is missing, it’s as if his mind detaches from his body. He disconnects. Something within him breaks. It’s happened before. It’s not too much of a surprise.
The next thing James knows, he’s standing on a battlefield with Voldemort’s dead body in front of him. This is more surprising.
This is what happened while James was gone. James won’t remember it, but he’ll have to live with it when he hears the story.
