    Tobio does not cry at his grandfather's deathbed. Or his funeral. He sits at the shrine in his house and stares at a picture of Kazuyo unblinkingly, willing the tears to come. They don't.

    His mother says he's taking it well. Pats him on the head and says he's very mature. But he feels wrong.

    There's nothing inside him. Just a void. Nothing and nothing and nothing and something is wrong with him and he doesn't understand what.

    Or: Grief is strange. Tobio doesn't know how to deal with it.
