A smile tugs at the corner of Eddie’s mouth. “I am also very aware of that.”

“I mean,” Eddie backtracks hastily, “that I probably don’t—uh, that I don’t want a hook up. Just the single, uh, kiss. For research.”
“Right,” Buck nods. “For research.”
They turn back to the TV, sipping beers and spooning dessert, room quiet save for the telenovela playing. Buck, gun to his head, could not tell you who or what is on the screen right now. The brave, strong part of his brain has surrendered shamefully, white flag hoisted while the rest of his brain—stupid, stupid—hosts a skillfully imagined supercut of his best friend kissing men. It’s surprisingly new subject matter for him. What’s unsurprising is his distaste for every conjured scenario, discarding each indistinguishable stranger until the reel buffers on something more… familiar.
“Well—”
Eddie waits a patient minute for Buck to continue before asking, “Well, what?”
“I just mean—if it’s just a kiss, right.” Buck pauses. “You could, uh. You could try it with me.”
or, buck thinks kissing men and women feels pretty much the same. eddie’s not buying it. sometimes settling a bet requires kissing your best friend, a lot, for research

Summary
Sitting here on the cold stones of the floor, not-quite-cowering in the presence of this stranger, Eddie feels small and insignificant. The man is nothing short of a giant, with biceps the size of Eddie’s whole head and strong, muscular thighs spilling out from under the fabric of his clothing, shoulders broad to accommodate the hulking chest. There’s a golden glow to his skin that’s more than simply a tan. It’s like the man was crafted from sunlight, like the sun has burrowed under his skin and made his body her home. He bathes the room in a pleasant, warm light.
Eddie can feel it, too — a gravitational pull toward this man, this god, because that’s clearly what he is. As if he’s the center of the universe, the star that everything orbits around. It’s hardly the first time a deity has ever shown themselves to a mortal, but Eddie isn’t prepared for how mesmerizing it is.Or; legendary hero Eddie is captured and presented as a human sacrifice to Buck, the god of war. Buck is a lot more softhearted than expected.

Detective Evan Buckley has had four mentors in the year since he passed the detective exam, and not a single one of them has wanted to keep him on longer than a few months. All he wants is to be better at his job and have someone actually care to teach him the finer parts of his new path.
