“I never said you needed protecting,” he said, more firmly now. “I worry. That’s different.”
Her jaw tightened. “Is it?”
Bob’s eyes blazed for a moment, stepping closer. Yelena had to crane her head up to look at him, her arms folded defensively over her chest. She could feel the heat radiating off of him. He was very close.
“I’m starting to think that you want a reason to fight with me,” Bob said after a quiet moment.
She wanted to say something - anything - but the words were jammed in her throat. And now, looking at him, she suddenly didn’t know how to explain herself. Not to this version of Bob, the one who stood taller now, steadier, more confident, who flew into hurricanes like it was nothing. After months of training and super hero-ing, he was stronger, clearer, sure of himself.
And she… wasn’t.
Bob didn’t press. He just stood there in silence, rain-drenched, patient, watching her with gentle, steady eyes. The glow in them had dimmed, fading slowly back to brown, like the storm inside him was calming too.
Finally, she said, quieter, “I don’t want to fight with you.”
“I don’t want to fight with you either.” His voice was soft and sad.

“I am helping,” Yelena mumbles around the spoon in her mouth. Bob shoots her a speculative side eye but say nothing.
“Supervision is helping.”
Snorting his disbelief rather than engaging, Bob returns to his work, pretending to studiously ignore the way her pink tongue licked at her cereal spoon, like a kitten desperate for the last remnants of cream.
For all his pretending, the subtle reddening of his cheeks, and the way his tongue peeks out to lick at his lips as if he can taste her, is a dead giveaway that she has his attention.

Then there’s Bob, straight across from her in the back of the room, in the corner again. His hair is dusty and he’s in this blue sweater and sweatpants riddled with holes from when he stepped in for the mission he wasn’t supposed to be on. He’s looking at the pantsuit-woman, with his hands hanging loose against his sides like he hasn’t got a thing to hide. Yelena had seen him only hours earlier in the vivid coloring of an East Coast sunset, getting shot at by multiple field agents with a diverse variety of arms and numerous rounds of ammunition. He’d refused to standby while they sent in an extraction team - humans he said the minute they stepped into the tower.
Just Bob, she thinks, watching his hand go further up right before she meets his eyes -

“What, um,” he said, and immediately there was the guard on his face, the mask. “What did— what do I— what do you think I might want to talk about?”
Yelena swallowed. The doors were still open. “Oh, I don’t know. Uh, like the, uh, crazy things my dad says. Like, maybe if you wanted to talk about that, I thought, you know, you could come in and we could talk about that.”
Bob didn’t move for a moment. His dark eyes were fixed on the floor, on the crack between the elevator and the floor to her room. On the void between, tiny and endless, a crack of pitch blackness in the building that eyes never saw and a finger couldn’t fit into, but a void all the same. “Do you… want to talk about that?” he asked, his voice quiet and low and cautious.
