Summary
In the end, everything turned out okay. They were rescued from the deserted island, the pogues survived a couple more near death experiences, and most importantly they got the gold. Everything was supposed to be okay after that, and for a time it was. JJ and Kiara finally admitted their undying love to one another, they went on a year long surf trip, Pope got into the college of his dreams, John B and Sarah had a beautiful wedding, and even their unplanned teenage pregnancy didn’t spoil the joy and optimism that surrounded the pogues since they claimed the gold. Everything was okay, until it wasn’t.
“JJ’s barely half awake, drinking his too sweet coffee to wake himself up when his cellphone rings loudly. The sun is just starting to rise, muted light pouring through the large kitchen windows that open out to the sea, letting in a salty, cool breeze. It’s peaceful, like the world is still untouched by the day’s actions, like the day hasn’t begun yet. It’s a peace that’s untouchable so early in the morning, where all you can hear is the tranquil sounds of the waves crashing over each other. It’s a peace JJ thinks he will never again experience as he answers the call and hears, in the smallest voice possible, “Uncle JJ?”

"I'm sorry," Eddie murmurs again, chest tight.
