Methodically, he places his hands on Robby’s abdomen, pressing down lightly. His muscles tighten, guarding, and Jack can feel and see the wince that travels through his body. Jack's mind diagnoses what Robby's clearly already knows: acute appendicitis, no chance for laparoscopic surgery, and with Robby's stubbornness, high chance for peritonitis. A ticking time-bomb, essentially.
Their eyes meet, a silent, knowing conversation passing instantaneously. In tandem, they look out the bathroom’s window, at the Antarctic storm.

"Shane, honey, thank god. We were out walking and saw the ambulance leaving your driveway. I've been calling everywhere trying to find out if you're in the hospital. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, mom. It wasn't me. It was, um... I had a friend up with me, and he's... uh, in surgery. Launadiere. His appendix."
Shane takes a shaky breath, realizing there's no way he can keep his mom from hearing him cry at this point. His nerves are absolutely shot, he doesn't know if he needs a shot of espresso or vodka. God, Ilya's screams... He couldn't stop thinking about it.
"You had a friend with you on your silent retreat?"
Fuck it.
"Yeah, it was a romantic thing. Kind of ruined by the whole ambulance ride and surgery."
"Shane, you're seeing someone?"
Fuck it all.
"Yeah. Yeah, his name is Ilya Rozanov."
"Yeah, mom. I did."
The trip to the cottage is cut short when Ilya's appendix decides to ruin everything. Shane comes out to his parents in a very different way. Ilya starts to realize he can't be the one taking care of everyone else all the time.

Eddie’s head spun. “Sent home? But the school didn’t…” He shook his head, realising exactly what had happened with the school. He’d deal with it later. “Why didn’t you call me?”
His mother spread her hands. “You were working, Eddie, we know how important days like today are for you,” she said.
It was incredible how she could sound perfectly reasonable and yet so very patronising at the same time.

While in Texas Chris develops appendicitis, and Eddie gets him to the hospital eight hours later than he could have because his parents decided, once again, that they knew what was best.

Set right before Jason's death, this story picks up on Batman's accusations that Jason killed Felipe Garzonas as seen on "The Diplomat's Son" arc (Issues #424 and #425).
Only romantic relationship featured is between Jason Todd and Rena, no batcest AT ALL
