Summary
Ash Fox craves his father's attention and pride, but he never seems to get it. His uncle gets diagnosed with double pneumonia and as such, his cousin Kristofferson is sent to stay at Ash and his family's home while Kristofferson's father heals. Kristofferson seems to get Ash's father's validation effortlessly, which makes Ash jealous. To add salt to the wound, Ash has always been seen as 'different,' 'weird,' etc., while Kristofferson is viewed as 'normal' and 'a good kid.' But then, Ash learns of a secret Kristofferson had been keeping - a secret that would drastically change how people viewed him. Meanwhile, Mr. Fox(Ash's father) starts a rivalry between some farmers, which would end up landing him, his family and his community in big trouble.

Summary
It's the winter of 1913, in Manhattan, New York. Mordecai Heller - a fourteen year old boy involved with a gang - is finding his life increasingly stressful. He has to juggle his family, school, personal and gang life, all without being able to tell anyone. He's never really had any friends, and part of him thought he didn't want them. But that changed one day when he met Arthur Stokes, one of his classmates. When Mordecai begrudgingly agrees to spend a night at Arthur's house, something changes about their relationship.
