But that’s not what the story’s about. It’s about this: Jim was always going to fall in love with Spock – boldly, recklessly. He just didn’t expect to stay that way. A story about getting over all that.

Summary
Three years into their five year mission, Female Jim's biological clock starts ticking. As she is currently unattached and Spock is in a relationship with Uhura, she at first turns to Bones for help in making the ticking stop.
When he doesn't agree, it's purely by chance that Spock overhears a conversation regarding Jim's need for a child and logically deduces that as he is her other best friend he should do everything he can to help her. After all, there is no reason why copulation for breeding purposes should lead to any emotional investment or any jealousy from his intended.
Right?
Note to all readers: Uhura is a jealous cow and the bad guy in this story, Jim is an jealous bitch and Spock is just clueless in most things relationship wise. If you want canon true-to- character-down-to-the-last-follicle readings of them... I'm afraid this story isnt for you. I take liberties with their personalities. I do not sadly own anything related to Star Trek.

He thought Spock had to be absolutely nuts to want to go down there… and yet he still went. Because Jim knew what it was like to be willing to do anything to protect those you love, maybe not a mother, but then again, Winona had never been much of one, but M’aih… yeah, he understood. So he went.
(Or the one where Jim listens to his instincts and follows Spock down to Vulcan... everything changes from there, because of the love two men have for their mothers).
