Summary
“Should call you the Ottawa Puppies,” says the Toronto centre, Svensson. As an insult it makes no sense, so Ilya ignores it, until he continues, “Hear Hollander keeps you on a short leash.”
Ilya is the captain, so if anything, he should be holding the leash. In English, you can be singular or plural, but he knows what Svensson is trying to say. He is saying Ilya Rozanov, you are Hollander’s bitch.
“Only sometimes,” Ilya replies, grinning. He wins the face off.
OR: Ilya trains himself to be a very, very good guard dog for Shane.

This story took over me incessantly for a whole week. Different versions of me read these words just when I needed them the most. The slow burn was exquisite, delicious and gripping. I could write soliloquies about the author’s style, it can be summarized in “afraid and unafraid of referencing.” ARABIC, THE POEMS IN THE BEGINNING OF THE CHAPTERS, THE EXTERNAL REFERENCES, THE CITATIONS, THE POIGNANT CHANGE IN POINT OF VIEWS, THE LITERARY CHOICES, HOW MUCH FUN AND CLEARLY PASSIONATE THE AUTHOR IS ABOUT THIS STORY, THE IMMEASURABLE AMOUNT OF CARE OF EVERY SINGLE WORD IN THE SCENES INCLUDED, EVERYTHING WAS IMPORTANT
The themes explored, the words, it wasn’t afraid of making the bold choice, of extending the suffering, of elongated and immersing into their own world while highlighting the consequences. The passion, the vulnerability which felt common in how often it happened but didn’t cheapen it.
The constant call back to little details that were so obviously important from the first mention yet melted your heart every single time they were referenced because “You remembered.” … “How could I forget?”
The sacrifices, how they always took care of each other, how they were completely and mutually in love w each other, how every moment together mattered, wasn’t taken for granted. THE BOOKS, THEIR BOOK, THE VOW WRITTEN SUCCINCTLY BUT ENCAPSULATED THEM PERFECTLY IN THE FIRST PAGE OF A BOOK….
In conclusion, this took over me and I need to memorize it and keep finding more and more themes and memorize all of the beautiful poetry mentioned and read the references and then read this story again to see and truly understand how it was integrated in the story and then read it again for fun and then keep annotating it and never share this story because nobody will get it like I get it and I need to scream to the world what a beautiful story this is and how they’re insane, they’re wrong yet so perfect for each other and I don’t understand how others don’t get it,… I have a lot of feelings.

I know why I didn’t bookmark this when I first read it in February. However, I honestly haven’t stopped thinking about it all year!
It’s just so manically wonderful! The writing, the details, the different themes explored, the characters… I COULD SOB WITH THE SOLE THOUGHT OF THE TREE HOUSE
