“Are you?” Armand’s voice pauses, not even daring to speak the words into existence.
“What?”
“Leaving.”
He cannot look up. He cannot bear the answer if it is honest. The words were loaded, squeezed out in a single deliberate breath, the intent behind it cutting through the room like a wire. The silence thickened. Armand went rigid. His stillness turned absolute, the kind that made Daniel doubt he was even drawing breath. After a moment, Daniel let out a quiet, resigned sigh.
“I’ll be back.”
Armand scoffs like that's the funniest thing he’s ever heard, He scoffs—because if he doesn’t, he might shatter.
And Daniel hears it, and looks at him, and something in Armand fractures anyway.

Radovid was a foppish, drunken disgrace, but he was still a damn sight more capable than many of his courtiers liked to think.
He had spent years being educated in the art of war and combat. Although violence didn’t come naturally to him, he had been trained by some of the finest generals on the continent. He could hold his own, particularly against a bardling that had the self preservation skills of a gnat.
