Heartbeat quickening, he stared into the darkness enshrouding the walkway on the opposite side of the courtyard. The soft glow of the single lantern in his periphery made it all the harder for his eyes to focus, and he couldn’t make out a thing.
The warm air was still. The cicadas still buzzed away, unseen in the night. On the back of Shen Zechuan’s neck, all of his hackles were raised and a shiver ran down his spine. He glanced up to the rooftop, looking for the vague silhouettes of Xiao Chiye’s guards, but came up empty. Something was terribly wrong.
